Implementation: People not Trees
Changing lives: not just bulbs - the programme goal is to retire 100,000 light bulbs.- Tackle Poverty: spending less on light means more household income.
Implementation: the Science
By substituting old 100 watt lamps with 100,000 x 11 watt bulbs we will eliminate 3,500 tonnes of CO2 and the need to add extra 5 megawatts of electricity generation in India. Every single substituted CFL lamp cuts 34kg of CO2 each year. All old retired bulbs are broken, the glass is recycled and metal is reclaimed.
Implementation: The challenge
We have targeted India, because our partners have successfully operated there for 135 years and the electricity market demand is expected to grow. There are about 3,000,000 households in Delhi in 2001 (1). Of whom 8.3% live in poverty. This is defined by the Economic Survey of Delhi as living on less than a €1 a day and consuming less than 2100 calories in food (2). Our goal is to distribute 100,000 CFL bulb in to a target group of almost 250,000 household in the area.

Using 400 litres of petrol produces 1 tonne of carbon dioxide.
Ireland's largest source of CO2 is from transport.
Carbon Dioxide is not the only transport related source of green house gas.
Sulphur Dioxide from using diesel is also contributor to acid rain.
